About Santa & Sons Christmas Trees

A working family tree farm
Santa & Sons owners Mark and Patricia Rohlfs
Mark & Patricia Rohlfs, founders of Santa & Sons, enjoy a moment at the Christmas tree lot. Only their team efforts allowed the farm to survive some lean early years. They remain committed to each other and to the continued operation of the Christmas tree farm.

Santa & Sons Christmas Trees was founded in 1983 by Mark and Patricia Rohlfs, a husband and wife team in every respect. During those years Christmas Mark operated the Christmas tree farm in Oregon while Patricia operated the retail Christmas tree lots in the Phoenix, Arizona area. In 1993 Mark & Patricia moved the retail tree lot from Arizona to the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, first in Studio City until 1996, then Sherman Oaks until 2000, and finally to our current location at Los Angeles Valley College in Valley Glen on the corner of Burbank Blvd. and Coldwater Canyon.

Our story started out not as sellers of Christmas trees but as field workers in Oregon on some of the early Christmas tree farms We started out as a co-op farm labor crewin the 1970's. In 1978, a group of us organized as a co-op labor crew and in 1981 we planted our first trees. Those agriculture roots hold still, and we grow our own Christmas trees to this day, shipping interstate wholesale Christmas tree loads throughout the United States. And just as we have done for over thirty years, we continue to ship fresh, selected high quality trees direct from our own Christmas tree fields all season long to our only retail Christmas tree lot in the San Fernando Valley.

Christmas Tree lots throughout the yearsPrevious Christmas Tree lot locations

Many of our long time customers remember us from some of our previous locations around the San Fernando Valley. Studio City Public Library now sits on the corner of Moorpark & Whitsett where we had our first Los Angeles Christmas tree lot from 1993 to 1996. A wonderful man by the name of Tony Dell Aqua agreed to lease us that property, and it was very much due to his generous spirit that we ended up at that spot in the San Fernando Valley. Eventually he sold the property to the City of Los Angeles for the new neighborhood library. Our retail tree lot back then was before we moved to shade tents to protect the Christmas trees from the sun. It was a great small neighborhood tree lot where we made many friends and introduced our personal style of doing business.

When library construction forced us to move away from Studio City, Sherman Oaks was the next stop. We found a home next to the Fashion Square Mall at the corner of Riverside and Hazeltine, across from Bloomingdale's and Trader Joe's. From 1997 to 2000, we gained notoriety with our real native American tipis at pumpkin time and the huge shade structure we built for the Christmas trees. The size of the lot allowed our Christmas tree lot to grow, and we found many new customers and friends at this new site. Of special mention here is Gloria Robinson, a lifelong resident of the neighborhood, the tree lot's immediate neighbor and great friend.

It was the move from Studio City to Sherman Oaks when we first started sending out postcards to let our customers know where to find us. We still send a new card every year to thousands of repeat customers. We respect our customer’s privacy so our mailing list is never shared in any way. Here are some samples of the cards that we have sent over the years. See how many you remember!

Previous Santa & Sons postcards

Eventually, in 2001 construction of a new DWP substation on the location in Sherman Oaks forced us to again seek out a new home somewhere in the San Fernando Valley. This time help arrived from our customers, people from the local area who introduced us to the good folks at Los Angeles Valley College.
